Do you really drink homebrew out in public!? I thought that was Illegal!
Yes, yes we do. And no, it is not Illegal; not anymore anyway. Thanks to the efforts of the Illinois Homebrew Alliance, the Illinois General Assembly passed HB0630 as Public Act 098-055
, making it legal to consume Homebrew in public, all private locations, and at Retail Licensed Premises where allowed
235 ILCS 5/6-36(c) Homemade brewed beverages made in compliance with the limitations specified in subsection (a) may be consumed by the person who made it and his or her family, neighbors, and friends at any private residence or other private location where the possession and consumption of alcohol is permissible under this Act, local ordinances, and other applicable law, provided that the homemade brewed beverages are not made available for consumption by the general public.
I want to join up; what do I have to do?
That is easy, come to a meeting! Check out the New Members Page
for more information.
Why do you exist? What is the purpose of the Spent Grain Society? How are you different from other Homebrew Clubs?
This club was formed to provide a social and educational outlet to home brewers of all levels.
Can I belong to the Spent Grain Society and be in other Homebrew Clubs at the same time?
Absolutely! We do not think ourselves to be the end-all be-all of Homebrew Clubs. Many of our members are in more than one Club. Truth is, there are many fine Homebrew Clubs in the area and if you do not find our way of doing things to your liking, please check them out. Some example clubs local to the Western Suburbs: BOSS
, and Silverado
Do you collect Dues? Why do you collect Dues?
Yes, we collect $12/year in dues. We collect dues to maintain our non-profit status and pay for our insurance. For a better explanation, check out the New Members
Do you have a raffle? Why? What?
Yes, we hold raffles at every meeting. The funds generated will also help off-set the insurance costs, but mainly will go towards fun, social events for the club. Each month’s raffle will be different. We will work on getting items that will be useful to homebrewers. Mostly, we will curate items for each raffle, but if members wish to donate items, we will happily collect them and have a quarterly raffle dedicated to just those items.
Are you a 501(c)(7) non-profit organization? Why?
Not yet, but we are working on it. It is in the best interest of the club to carry insurance and in order to do so, we need to be a non-profit organization, hence the need to be one.
How are your meeting conducted?
As quickly and simply as possible. Check out this page
for more details!
